The Research Centre for European Multipart Music of the Department of Folk Music Research and Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Austria, together with the Austrian Folk Song Society, the umbrella organisation of the Austrian Folk Music Societies in the federal provinces, and the Viennese Folk Music Society, are pleased to announce the 6th Symposium of the European Voices Series.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 1 February 2021
Johann Gottfried Herder characterised singing and song as human acts of personal and cultural agency (Herder & Bohlman 2017). These agencies are enacted musically thus centralising the idea of ‘performance’. The interplay between the textually verbalised and musical content during performance is affected by skills, habits, and tacit knowledge of the agents as well as by the cultural and contextual features of performance(s). Acquisition and transmission processes make semantic references possible in the absence of the word, as well, as in yodelling practices, for example. Furthermore, the interplay between singing practices and music performed on instruments and/or played for dancing affects our social and cultural uses and under-standings of sound.
In this framework, the intense degree of personal and cultural agency found in multipart music practices comes into sharp focus. One of the results of the tension between the objective and subjective dimensions of music and human agency within a group of performers is its characteristic and unique sound, an essential subject of study for our field. Psychoacoustic research on sound production and perception allow us to explore its features and their implications for the music making process. This is all the more necessary today, when performance processes increasingly draw on influential interchange between musical practice and documentation (e.g., in audio-visual form, in archives, on the internet, and on social media).
The symposium will focus on the diverse ways that singing, song and sound emerge and are experienced, based on personal and cultural agencies, and their effect on the practice and its discourse.
We invite proposals for individual presentations, panels, roundtables, posters and Diamond presentations to be submitted by email to email@example.com before 1st of February 2021.

Papers should be based on original research that addresses the symposium theme and should not have already been presented elsewhere. Papers should be designed and pre-sented to take no more than 20 minutes, including audio-visuals.
Participants are advised to bring alternative modes of presentation delivery if using PowerPoint, DVD, and so on, in case of unexpected technical difficulties on the day of presentation.
Accepted presentations by individual members will be grouped by the Program Committee into sessions of one-and-a-half hours. Each presentation will be allotted 20 minutes, inclusive of all illustrations, audio-visual media or movement examples, plus 10 minutes for questions and discussion.
Please submit an abstract of 250–300 words outlining the content, argument and conclusion, and its relation to one of the symposium themes. Please include the type of illustrations to be used in the presentation, such as slides, DVD, video (including format), and so on.
We encourage presentations in the form of panels.
Proposals may be submitted for panels consisting of at least three presenters. The structure is at the discretion of the coordinator. The proposal must explain the overall purpose, the role of the individual participants, and signal the commitment of all participants to attend the conference. Each panel proposal will be accepted or rejected as a whole.
Please submit a short panel overview of 250–300 words, and an individual paper proposal, as described under “Individual Presentations” above, for each presenter. All of the proposals for a panel should be submitted together by the panel chair. Proposals should address one or more aspects of the established symposium theme.
We also encourage presentations in the form of roundtables: sessions that are entirely planned, coordinated, and prepared by a group of people, one of whom is the responsible coordinator. The aim is to generate discussion between members of the roundtable who present questions, issues, and/or material for about 5 minutes on the pre-selected unifying theme of the roundtable. The following discussion, at the convener’s discretion, may open into more general discussion with the audience.
The total length of a roundtable will be one-and-a-half hours inclusive of all discus-sions.
Proposals may be submitted for a roundtable consisting of 3–5 presenters, with the structure at the discretion of the convener, who will also chair the event. The proposal must explain the overall purpose, the role of the individual participants, and signal the commitment of all participants to attend the symposium. Each roundtable proposal will be accepted or rejected as a whole.
We also invite proposals for poster presentations up to 10 minutes in length. Accepted poster presentations will be grouped by the Programme Committee into one session of the symposium’s programme. Please submit an abstract of 250–300 words.
Individual Diamond presentations are 7 minutes long and consist of 21 slides that are set to advance automatically every 20 seconds. Accepted presentations will be grouped by the Programme Committee into one session of the symposium’s programme. Please submit an abstract of 250–300 words.
